Supreme Court allows Karti Chidambaram to travel to UK, Germany till May 27 subject to conditions
The top court told him not to open or close any bank accounts abroad.
The Supreme Court on Friday allowed Karti Chidambaram to travel to the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain from Saturday to May 27 subject to certain conditions, reported PTI.
Karti Chidambaram, the son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, is currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. His company had allegedly received Rs 10 lakh from INX Media, which got a Foreign Exchange Promotion Board clearance for Rs 4 crore but had actually received Rs 305 crore in foreign funding.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud listed out the conditions with a warning that any violation may attract adverse consequences. It asked him to file an undertaking about his flight schedule and return date to India. The bench also asked him not to open or close any overseas bank accounts and not to enter into any property transaction abroad.
If the undertaking was not filed before Karti Chidambaram leaves India, then the “petitioner shall not be allowed to go abroad,” the bench said. The bench made it clear that the permission to travel abroad will not be used in any court of law to secure “statutory or regular bail in any other offence”. It also asked Karti Chidambaram to return his passport to the Enforcement Directorate when he is back in India.
